Fairhaven Police Investigating Head-On Crash with Multiple Injuries from Weekend

10 Injured in Crash, Including Six Children

FAIRHAVEN — Lt. Kevin Kobza reports that the Fairhaven Police Department is investigating after a two-vehicle crash led to 10 people being injured, including six children, over the weekend.

At approximately 8:50 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, Fairhaven Police responded to the intersection of Howland Road and Sycamore Street for a report of a head-on crash.

Upon arrival, officers located a 2012 Mazda 3 sedan and a 2002 Ford Explorer SUV that had collided. Both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage.

The Ford Explorer was being operated by a 44-year-old New Bedford man. The SUV was occupied by eight other passengers, including six children ranging in age from two to 13 years old.

The Mazda was being driven by a 38-year-old Fairhaven man, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

All 10 people in the vehicles suffered what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries. Several ambulances responded to the scene from Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, Acushnet and New Bedford. All injured parties were transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford.

The initial investigation indicates that the man driving the Mazda eastbound on Howland Road went across the center line and struck the Ford Explorer, that was travelling westbound, head-on.

The cause of the crash remains under active investigation by the Fairhaven Police Department.

Fairhaven Police Department Responds to Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash

FAIRHAVEN — Chief Michael J. Myers reports that the Fairhaven Police Department responded to the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash Wednesday night.

At approximately 5 p.m., Fairhaven Police responded to the area of 475 Bridge St. for a report of a serious motor vehicle crash.

At this time, the scene is very active and drivers are asked to seek alternate routes.

All further information and any inquiries should be referred to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

Fairhaven Police Investigating Serious Crash on Route 240 that Injured Four

FAIRHAVEN — Lt. Kevin Kobza reports that the Fairhaven Police Department is investigating a serious crash on Route 240 that injured four people and shut down the southbound side of the highway for nearly four hours Wednesday afternoon.

At approximately 12:40 p.m., Fairhaven Police were called to a three-vehicle crash on the southbound side of Route 240, between Route 195 and Bridge Street in Fairhaven.

The initial investigation indicates that the driver of a black 2006 Nissan Frontier pickup truck, towing a boat, had a tire blown on the boat trailer and pulled off of the right side of the road onto the grass beside the breakdown lane.

As the driver of the truck and a passenger were outside of the vehicle inspecting the blown tire, the driver of a red 1997 Pontiac Trans Sport minivan allegedly lost control and collided with a blue 1996 Toyota Corolla that was driving in the right lane in front of it.

The minivan spun out of control and nearly struck the boat before going off of the road.

The Toyota struck the boat, injuring both of the pedestrians that were standing beside the boat.

Upon arrival, officers closed the southbound side of the highway with the assistance of State Police.

One of the pedestrians, a 40-year-old Needham man, was seriously injured and was taken by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital by Fairhaven Fire paramedics.

The second pedestrian, a 53-year-old Fall River man, was also seriously injured. A medical helicopter responded and landed on the southbound side of the highway to transport the man to Rhode Island Hospital. The northbound side of the road was closed for a short time while the helicopter was on scene.

The male operator and sole occupant of the minivan, a 51-year-old New Bedford man, was injured and transported by Mattapoisett Police paramedics by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital.

The male operator and sole occupant of the Toyota Corolla, a 64-year-old Acushnet man, was injured and taken by ambulance to Saint Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford by Acushnet Fire paramedics.

The current conditions of the patients are unknown at this time.

The State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section (CARS) was called to the scene to assist with the investigation.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The vehicles were towed away and Route 240 was reopened around 4:15 p.m.

In addition to the State Police, members of the Fairhaven Fire Department, Mattapoisett Police and Fire Departments and Acushnet Fire Department all responded to the crash.

Fairhaven Police Arrest Hit and Run Driver

FAIRHAVEN — Lieutenant Kevin Kobza reports that Fairhaven Police arrested a man over the weekend who was allegedly involved in a hit and run crash and swerved at a pedestrian that was trying to stop him from fleeing.

RAYMOND PIRES, AGE 51, OF FAIRHAVEN was charged with:

  • Leaving the Scene of an Accident (Two Counts)
  • Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Assault With a Dangerous Weapon
  • Unlawfully Attaching License Plates
  • Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle
  • Operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle
  • Disorderly Conduct
  • Disturbing the Peace
  • Trespassing With a Motor Vehicle

At approximately 2 p.m., Saturday, May 5, Fairhaven Police received multiple reports of a crash at the intersection of Weeden Road and Babbitt Street, involving a 2000 Honda Civic and a 2011 GMC SUV.

PIRES, the driver of the Honda, fled from the scene of the crash prior to the arrival of police.

Through the subsequent investigation, it was determined that PIRES struck two vehicles and then fled from the crash at a high rate of speed. While fleeing, PIRES allegedly swerved his car at a witness who was trying to prevent him from leaving the scene.

He then drove across the lawn of a house on nearby Studley Street.

After driving through the residential neighborhood, PIRES ended up back at the scene of the crash. A group of bystanders who were working on a nearby construction site prevented PIRES from fleeing again and detained him until officers arrived.

“While we don’t recommend that bystanders attempt to stop criminals themselves, this was helpful in making sure that the suspect didn’t get away a second time,” Lt. Kobza said.

PIRES was arrested without further incident when officers arrived.

He was arraigned Monday in Third District Court in New Bedford.

No injuries were reported.

These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.

Fairhaven has a year round population of just over 16,000 and has 12.53 square miles of land area, plus over 17 miles of coast line. The town is situated on Buzzard’s Bay on the south coast of Massachusetts and shares a busy commercial harbor with the city of New Bedford.

The Fairhaven Police Department employs 42 full-time and 6 part-time personnel. We have 31 full-time and 4 permanent/intermittent officers. There are 6 full-time communications personnel and one clerk as well as a part-time custodian.
